About Sila
Sila Jewellery is a small custom jewellery studio in Chennai. We make jewellery to order — one piece at a time, for one person at a time.
There’s no showroom and no stock. That’s a deliberate choice, and this page explains it.
Elakkiya Prabhakaran
Elakkiya runs Sila. Before starting it, she ran a jewellery business in New Zealand, then returned to Chennai.
She’s the person you deal with throughout — the first message, the design conversation, the estimate, the handover. Not a sales counter, not a different person each time you call.
Saratha Prabhakaran
Elakkiya’s mother, Saratha, has spent around twenty years in custom jewellery in Chennai. She works alongside Elakkiya.
What she brings isn’t only experience. It’s the people — the suppliers who source honestly, and the goldsmiths who can actually execute detailed work. Those relationships take years to build and can’t be bought.
That’s why Sila can take on complicated pieces rather than only simple ones.
Why we don’t have a shop
A showroom needs stock, and stock has to be paid for whether anyone buys it or not. That cost ends up in the price of everything on display.
It also changes what you’re offered. A shop shows you what it already has and hopes something is close enough to what you wanted.
We’d rather make the piece you actually asked for. So we meet by appointment, work through WhatsApp for most of the conversation, and put the money into the jewellery instead of the rent.
How we work
You’re involved at every stage. You see the design before it’s made, approve it, and know the cost in writing before anything starts.
Gold carries BIS hallmarking and diamonds come with IGI certification, as relevant to what you’ve ordered.
If something can’t be done — the design won’t wear well, the timeline is too tight, the budget doesn’t match the piece — we tell you at the start rather than halfway through.
Where we work
We’re based in Chennai and work with customers across the city, particularly Anna Nagar, Aminjikarai, Shenoy Nagar, Arumbakkam and Kilpauk.
We also work with families abroad who want jewellery made in Chennai. Most of the process happens over WhatsApp anyway, so distance is rarely the obstacle people expect.
Consultations are by appointment, Monday to Saturday, 10am–5pm.
